My DH and I just pulled it apart again and made sure it was all aligned - found it to be just like the photo. Still it will not pick up the bobbin thread and when I try to sew, no stitches and the tension tightens up so badly the thread won't move through - FRUSTRATING!! Off to my repairman today, I guess! It's okay - you can never have too many FW's and it was my dear mil's. Thank you all for your kindness and I'll let you know what the diagnosis is!

This is what I was referring to in my reply also. I found a picture that explains it better. There are grooves on the underside of the needle plate. The hook (A2 in the pic) needs to be lined up between the grooves. Check that it was not turned when you were working on it.
