You actually need to be sure that the surge protector is on at all times. Once you shut off that light all you have is a glorified extension cord. The light means that it is on and working to take the hit from electrical problems. When we had a computer store I saw more fried computers from people shutting off the protection.

I am so glad your family was not hurt and things can be replaced, people cannot. What a blessing.
