Around here, it is electronics that are what are in danger. I can't imagine the average hooligan around here stealing a sewing machine. They'd probably get kidded from their friends. Phones, mp3 players, even flat screen tvs...now that's a different story.
But I've thought about it...but then my Janome is so heavy...

Thank goodness you were there to catch the fire in its wake. OMG that could have been a disaster. Thanks for the warning. I am so happy that you are both safe. You can always buy a new ironing board and iron.

Upon removing the cover of the ironing board, I was surprised to see how much melt there was - without showing the burn on the top!!! Scarey!! So, Please unplug your irons!!

I'm so glad no one was hurt and there was so little damage.
Makes me miss my parent's house. They had a house fire when I was a small child and when they built their dream house, my mother insisted on a few features.
One feature was that in every room, the lower electric sockets were normal but the upper ones were all controlled by a wall switch. Anything that might possibly be hazardous was plugged into the top outlet and the wall switch was off unless there was someone in the room.
The other feature she insisted on was having all the electrical outlets in her sewing room installed four feet off the floor. That made it sooooo easy to just reach over and unplug everything when not in use. I'm surprised more people don't insist on this, it's so much easier on the back.

I have one of those irons too. But I always unplug it, not because I was afraid of a fire, but because I was afraid either I or one of the cats would knock it over and burn myself/themselves. Guess I just have one more reason now. So glad no one was hurt!
