Sorry for your fire but glad you're Ok and that the fire didn't spread.
Lots of good advice from members. In my sewing room I have a cheap iron that doesn't turn itself off. Found that it didn't always turn off when I turned the dial to OFF, so I unplug it now. Even so the plug is pretty warm when I pull it out of the wall socket so I don't leave it on for too long.
Will take the advice given about power strips, that they need to be on to save your machine, computer, etc. in case of a power surge, so I won't turn mine off thinking I'm still protected from a power surge.
