I've been looking at all the pictures people are posting of their machines. I can't believe how few hand machines there are in the States. It seems to be all treadles and electrics. Anything that plugs in is too modern for me. In fact I find round bobbins a bit new and strange. I'm a long bobbin girl through and through.
The reason the there were more hand machines in the UK and Europe is because of the lack of space in the flats and housing. It was a lot easier to put away a portable that having a treadle in the way. I had a real good friend from the Needlebar who lives in the UK tell me that one and it makes sense to me. I remember studying in my history class that there was a major shortage of wood in Britain and they used to ship it from here to there. So that might be another reason.
Either way I think that it is lovely that you use your machines to sew with and to make your quilts. I am like you I do not like electricity and we only have 110v here. I look forward to seeing more of your quilts and especially your machines!
