Did you write to Rowenta? Sometimes customer services will make good on a faulty item. Your iron sounds very faulty. 'Course you could also happen to mention that you are part of this board and how many, many quilters want to know!

PS: Tweety, your rants are understandable. My DH always insists on irons big & small be unplug at night and when leaving our home.
