I only put it through the lining - this is sufficient to keep the purse closed. I pull the lining away from the outer bag, hold the magnet washer where I want it, and use a very pointed pencil to draw in the two outer lines. Remove the washer and then take a seam ripper and gently insert it at the end of the lines making a small cut on each penciled line. The prongs do the rest of the cutting when inserting. Don't forget to put the washer on between the lining and the outer bag where it won't be seen. Just be careful with the ripper that you don't cut too much and you will be fine.
