I noticed that when we burp our babies we don't put them on our shoulder, we sit them in our lap. my new GD burps,"progectile" (sp) and a lot of it.
I make my bib and burp cloth all in one. Using 2 pieces of flannel I cut out the bib and extend the bottom, however long you want it. I cut mine about 12" long. Sew them right sides together, turn right side out and top stitch about 1/2" in from the edge.
The baby has the bib on and I hold the other end in my hand or on my lap. You could also place the long end on your shoulder.
Works for me.
