Hi Quilters:
The 8 pointed star is so pretty. I've had 2 classes on doing this block...one with the pattern piecing like Steve's and the other one using all HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES except in the 4 corners and you use a full square for the corners.

For a 15 inch Block:
Cut 4 1/ 2 inch strips in 3 colors the Width Of Fabric (WOF) (my 3 colors were: Background-WHITE, with RED and GREEN)
Cut each of these 3 strips into 4 1/2 inch squares

To make triangles:
Putting right sides together of red/green; green/white (white being the background on mine) mark diagonal lines then sew a scant 1/4 inch on either side of the marked line then cut on the marked line. Press open and you have the units for the block.

Now, picture a block with 4 blocks across and 4 blocks down. The placement of your blocks will be as follows:

Row 1: Solid WHITE background square
White/Red HALF SQUARE triangle with the red on the bottom right
White/Green HST with white top left,Red bottom right
Solid White background square

Row 2: White/Green HST with White part on bottom Left,Green Top Right
Green/Red HST Green bottom left, Red top Right
Green Red HST RED Top LEFT, Green BOTTOM Right
Red/WHite HST, Red TOP Left, White Bottom Right

Row 3. White/RED HST-White top left, Red Bottom Right
Red/Green HST-Red Top Left, Green, bottom right
Red/GReen HST-Red Bottom Left, Green Top Right
Green/White-HSTGreen Bottom Left, Red Top Right

Row 4. White background Square
Green/White HSQ-Green Top Left, White bottom right
White/Red HST - White bottom Left, Red top Right
White background square.

Sew each of the 4 squares together in each row.

Sew Row one to Row 2,
Sew Row 2 to Row 3
Sew Row 3 to Row 4.

Block is complete and usually all the little points fit together perfectly and are "pointy."

For some reason I can't locate my Christmas Red/White/Green block but do have the 4th of July block so you can still see how it's done. This block, to me, was easier than the pattern Steve used???? It's a quick block and is very pretty. It is also the picture on my AVATAR under my name on the quilt board.
