In 1997 we added a garage/shop/and studio above the shop to our house. Each of these spaces is 26x26'. In 1997, I wasn't quilting but I did lot's of other crafty things. Until last November, the floor was still the plywood subfloor and I worked off folding tables. In Nov. we hired a cabinet maker to make the cabinets and we finished the floor in linolium that looks like hardwood. There's a space that's about 12' wide and 5 1/2' deep where we have metal shelving units on rollers. There's 4 - 4' shelves and 2 - 3' shelves. A 4', 3', and 4' on the 12' wall and then a 4', 3', and 4', right in front of them. Like I said they are all on rollers so they can be moved to access the ones in the back. All of my fabric is stored in plastic boxes from Walmart. The shelves are moveble to accomodate the size of the boxes. And, I can see what's inside. I also like to do memory albums, so one whole shelving unit houses all of the things for that craft. I always thought I wanted that space to be an inclosed closet, but now I like it the way it is and can get to anything I want without digging for it. We purchased the metal shelves from Costco.
