For the brick layer -- how about a nice herringbone pattern (that is what was laid in my back yard). It is basically the french braid.

I agree about the herringbone/French braid idea.
I have discovered I'm glad there is batting in my tree skirt, because if it didn't, all the harware in the tree stand would make incredible bumps in it.
