I made the skirts from quilt in a day and I put this batting that was thick and made it very pillow my girls loved them said it gave cush to the packages and when no packages where on it it was nice and fluffy looking... I had no Idea what I was doing back then but they still have them and the look good yet ....................

batting or no batting, depends on the look you want. I have used flannel in lieu of batting for many tabletop projects and that gives just the right amount of weight w/o puffiness - usually for a more modern look.

As for the tree skirt, I use either cotton batting or fusible fleece simply to give it softness and body. But it's a personal preference, I think!

    1. I would use flannel or maybe warm and natural for batting on the tree skirt
    2. Here is brick fabric, use it as a border? http://www.quiltknit.com/NC323-44-Co...cs_p_7395.html showing blue, but scroll down to related items, fat quarter pack.
Also RJR has this fabric- Salina Yoon Train Red Brick about 3/4 of the way down the page
http://www.bugfabric.com/rjr_fabrics.htm They also have Under Contruction fabric that would coordinate with the brick.

Someone may have already suggested this, since I didn't get through every post, but how about using fabric with a brick design instead of a brick design. A non quilter might get that easier anyway.

I put a layer of batting between the two pieces of fabric I think it make it lay down firmer and I also put a row of lace in between to match something in between and turn it rightside and then finish it. It makes it thicker and looks beautiful. I just gave my daughter one with Michael Miller fabric angels and she loves it now my son's fiance wants me to make her one. Good Luck. Sue

What about a star of Bethlehem tree skirt?Just don't have the center diamonds, or cut them in half so you have an octigon shape in the center. ;)

My skirts were like big dresden plates. I did QAYG then with separate pieces of batting in each blade. It worked very well.

For the brick layer -- how about a nice herringbone pattern (that is what was laid in my back yard). It is basically the french braid.

I agree about the herringbone/French braid idea.
I have discovered I'm glad there is batting in my tree skirt, because if it didn't, all the harware in the tree stand would make incredible bumps in it.
