Just have to make sure that after you put the granuals down, you wet it a little bit.
But, like I suggested before....maybe go to local nursery and ask what to use if you don't want to use anything around your veggies.
Also, if you have a local Cooperative Extension, they could probably help you too!
You can also pick up classes for Master Gardener. The classes are VERY informative. I've gotten my Master Gardener certificates in RI (got my first one back in 81--renewed it a few times), CT, GA and Hawaii. Depending on where you are, some you pay for, others they want you to volunteer your time back to the community.
