If your sewing machine throat plate does not have guidelines for various seam allowance widths use the tape by placing it to the right of the needle. There were some machines that did not have guidelines. The yellow tape with the black lines is easier to see than the lines on some throat plates. 5/8 is the standard seam allowance used in commerical patterns but some times you will find other widths used.
