I have no idea why I have this yellow tape in my sewing stuff, or where I got it.

What is it used for? Any ideas?

It is plastic-y, but releases easily, so it could be used on fabric to mark something, but what?

i've seen it used for hand quilting to make sure you achieve a certain number of stitches within an inch.

Looks like you put it to the right of your foot to get the seam size you want but I'm only guessing- never saw it before.

Fabric_fancy has it! Ahh, the light dawns! Of course! Thanks. I did notice that it tears lengthwise on the long lines fairly easily, so you could tear off a length of the markings you needed!

I've never seen this tape before, but if it tears accurately as you say on the lengthwise lines, then I suspect one would use if to mark a straight line handquiltiing pattern...such as 1/4" away from the seam of a block or border. Or 1/2" parallel lines in a grid across a quilt.

That would be my guess too.

If your sewing machine throat plate does not have guidelines for various seam allowance widths use the tape by placing it to the right of the needle. There were some machines that did not have guidelines. The yellow tape with the black lines is easier to see than the lines on some throat plates. 5/8 is the standard seam allowance used in commerical patterns but some times you will find other widths used.
