I had an aunt many, many years ago (probably early 50's) that did that and to this day I still remember that, even though I wasn't there and didn't see it. I was a young girl at that time and it has stayed with me. I think of it often when I'm sewing. To have yanked your finger out and broken the needle sounds even more horrible and worse pain.
