I used to work at Quilt in a Day (for almost 6 years, until recently). All fabric is quilt shop "highest quality"--they carry most major manufacturers, not just Benartex!!! Benartex manufactures Eleanor's Fabric lines.
The philosophy behind tearing the fabric, which is what they do at QIAD---tearing the fabric puts the fabric on the straight of the grain. Most fabric is not printed on the straight. They always give you extra fabric, at least 2 inches, so that you can easily square up the fabric to the proper straight of the grain and cut off the torn edges.
