You will want to quilt on more than just the corner squares because the batting needs to be held in place inside the quilt. If it's not quilted closely enough, over time and use, the batting will lump up. The batting package should tell you how close your quilting needs to be. Any of the suggestions mentioned would work great, and still be nice and simple.

And nice job! Your son will treasure this quilt for years to come. :)
