This was my Great Grandmothers recipe....dates back to late 1800's early 1900's:
Bread Pudding
3 Eggs, slightly beaten
1/3 Cup Sugar
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
Dash of Salt
2 1/2 Cups Scalded Milk
2 Slices of Bread, torn into bite sized pieces
Cinnamon
Blend eggs, sugar, vanilla & salt. Pour into buttered 1 & 1/2 quart glass casserole dish. Stir in bread pieces. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Set dish in pan of 1 inch very hot water. Bake at 350 degrees for 65-70 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool, then refrigerate.
Vanilla Sauce
1 Cup Sugar
1/4 teaspoon Salt
2 Tablespoons Flour
2 Cups boiling water
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
2 Tablespoons Butter
Combine sugar, salt & flour. Add water slowly. Stirring constantly. Cook over hot water (double boiler) about 8 minutes. Add Vanilla & butter. Stir until blended. Spoon over Bread Pudding.
This is the same recipe I have from my grandmother which dates back to 1875.
