I use this method frequently, although I put the batting down first, then the backing, then the top (backing and top RST). Then you can pin and when you sew, follow the edge of the top for the 1/4 inch seam.

I did have one disaster when the backing was not smooth and I ended up with a terrible ripple down the back. I think it would be chancy if you are planning to FMQ.
