It is a beautiful quilt. I hope you will put it in your portfolio if you do more work on commission.
If you mark up your labor and fabric cost at 15 to 25 percent, perhaps that would cover the overhead of shopping for the fabric and design time with the client. Charge for the fabric cost with your markup, then think about your labor. Clearly, you got creamed on the labor this time, but I saw a baby nine-patch with 9 12" or so sashed blocks somebody sold on etsy for 200 bucks and the family picked the fabric and the pattern so all she had to do was cut and sew and whip up a little fmq.

Whatever you charge, I understand why it felt like work. Not like a gift from the heart.
