It does depend on one's experience level and how imaginative/creative one is.
And the magazines seem to be selling new fabric lines, not new patterns, so I don't buy them.

I would rather buy a book that teaches me easier ways to do an old block that I would never attempt on my own the original way. I just got Trash to Treasure Pineapple Quilts by Gyleen X. Fitzgerald from ascarletthread.com and it came with a template that makes creating a perfect pineapple block so easy and I would never have attempted it in the past.
