I grew up in a house with oak floors (the inch wide ones) which lasted my parents 50 years and 5 kids and the floors are still there and look awesome. They were cool year around. I now have tile - it also is cool in summer but cold in winter and very hard. If I had my choice - real hard wood oak everywhere except bathroom.
