I put my top and bottom borders on first by accident, and then put on the sides! This was on the outer border only. The reason to put the sides on first is to save fabric making the longer borders. If your borders are 8 inches and your quilt will be 80 x 100, then your side border strips would be 84" long and your top and bottom border strips would be 80" long. Doing it the other way (top and bottom first) your top/bottom borders would be 64" long and your side borders would be 100" long.
Doing the sides first would allow you to use 2 WOF strips on all four sides.
