I put my top and bottom borders on first by accident, and then put on the sides! This was on the outer border only. I thought I had the sides that I was pinning, but after I had it sewed, I noticed it was the top. I don't think my MIL will notice.....the quilt's for her b-day. Is there a special reason to put borders on in this order? I really don't want to rip!

Are there rules about this? I do it in whatever order I want depending upon the quilt.

I wouldn't rip it out.....after all.....there are no quilt police. I had a pattern that stated to put the top and bottonm on first. I don't think it really make a difference.

Who's says it's a sin? There is no reason to do your borders in any order unless your using bias pieces. I'm sure that it looks good. Don't worry about it. No quilt police here!

I say "as long as you get the border on" and it comes out O.K., who cares.

I always put top & bottom on first. Didn't know there was a rule, just personal preference.

I don't think that matters as long as things come out square...

If you change it you might not have enough fabric in length, just leave it.

Me too. That way the side border strips aren't so long and sometimes I don't have to piece.

I think the reason folks do the sides first is because you need shorter pieces for the sides if you do that. Not a rule, just about saving fabric.

Put your hands on your head and turn around slowly. Lower your seam ripper ma'am and I won't have to use my rotary cutter to subdue you. Hehehe. I don't think the police will get you THIS time:>

I read somewhere that an easy way to remember is that you put your clothes on first (side boarders) and you put your shoes and hat on last (top and bottom).

It usually takes less fabric to put the side borders on first then the top & bottom ones, but I don't think there's any quilt police that will come & get you!

I had to go look at my patterns. I know some say sides first and then top, and some said top then sides. Depends. So I think you are totally safe. :):)

I almost always put the sides on first because I like the having the visual aspect of the top and bottom borders across the whole quilt, and not just running into the side borders.

However, in most cases it does not really matter. A few designs will call for the borders put on in a specific manner, but most of the time it's the quilter's choice. Just know that if you plan on doing this in the future, you may need to adjust the border lengths from the ones given in the directions. (IE, shortening the length of the top/bottom borders to the width of the center of the quilt and lengthening the side borders to the length of the whole quilt.)

Actually, putting top and bottom on first makes your side borders longer because they have to border the top/bottom borders now.

I had no idea that it mattered! I have made 29 quilts and just find this out?? About time, I guess. :) Seriously, I did not know, and I am also not worried about it. As long as the borders look okay, I don't care which goes on first.

(Yeah, I counted my quilts....have the count on my calendar. I do that because my sister always said she wished she knew how many she had made, and I have only been quilting a bit over 2 years...so it was easy for me to figure it out. Sis has been quilting 12 years.)

Your quilt......your way. I don't think I have ever heard that it had to be done a certain way. I have done it both ways depending on the quilt and the look I wanted. No sin here!!
