I may have committed a cardinal sin of quilting!

Putting the tp and bottom on first and the sides last give the quilt the optical illusion of being long. Putting the sides on first and the the top and bottom last give the quilt the optical illusion of being "short".
Like I said in another thread, do it the way YOU want it and throw out the rules. If the quilt police tell you it is wrong just smile at them and remind them that their badges need polishing...LOL!

I do either way. Sometimes putting on the sides first means I don't have to piece the top and bottom border. I think in the end no one will notice and anyone that does and says something doesn't really matter!

I like to put my side borders on first, because they are usually longer than the top and bottom. If I put the others on first, the side ones would be really long! And if the side borders are cut from the lengthwise grain, they will be less likely to stretch out of shape and can control the quilt body from stretching. I have heard that it takes less fabric if you do the side ones first, but I don't know if that is true.
