Well..... since we recently established there are no hard and fast quilt rules, how can you commit a sin? I don't think you should have to worry about quilting "commandments"!

The reason patterns state to sew the side borders on first is because they usually take more fabric than the top/bottom borders. But if you can, and I do this some of the time, cut the side borders without have to piece them to lengthen, it is ok. You have all the borders on, leave as is. MIL will love the quilt, after all you made with more than fabric and thread. You used LOVE.

Don't fret. You'll be fine. There are no rules and this will be hardly noticed unless you point it out. Don't even mention it. It will be loved

I do think it gives a cleaner look across the top.

It isn't a problem. Depending on the look a person is going for, you can have the top and bottom borders on first or you can have the sides on first. Sometimes I do it one way and sometimes I do another....then other times I put in cornerstones in each corner.

If you cut your borders to the length specified in the pattern, there is no way to switch them as one set will always be longer and go on last.
