Bill, I totally second this recommendation. What's important to us, to the dealer, to you might be very different than what's important to her.
If you want to surprise her, maybe research major brands of machines to find models that are in your price range and then "gift" her with the brochures and let her try out and choose one. You can talk to dealers to see what kinds of discounts from retail might be available. This will help to identify the price range.
