I didn't used to wash fabric first, but after a bad experience I am now washing all fabric first, usually when I get it home. Now I can't remember which of my fabric has been washed. Sometimes I can't tell so I am rewashing some. I don't wash scraps, usually washing the end project. It seems to take some time, but one ruined quilt was enough.
I saw a tip somewhere that after you wash a piece of material to cut a small triangle off one of the corners. I usually just pin a scrap of paper to it which says "washed". Not very creative; but, it works!
