I also enjoy washing, pressing and folding immediately. But then I also take everything out once a year, press and refold in a different spot. Just enjoy "petting" the fabric. And it helps me know what I have and where the holes in the stash are.

I don't pre-wash everything. I do pre-wash colours that are intense reds, purples etc. If I am in doubt about a fabric, I cut a sliver off across the width and wet it in the sink of warm water. I then squeeze out most of the water and leave the wad of fabric on top of white paper towel to dry. If any colour comes out in the water or there is a stain on the paper towel, I pre-treat it before use. I keep both retyne (before using fabric) and synthrapol (already in quilt) in the house along with my Shout colour catchers for quilt care.

Boy, that's me all over! I can't stand to have the chemicals in my sewing room. And you don't know what's been on that fabric.

I wash my fabric right before I start the project. I actually rather enjoy it. While ironing, it allows me to review the fabric choices and sometimes I make changes. Of course, I then have to wash the new selection.

Well, I usually wash my dark colored fabrics before using however, my friend told me about color catchers that you add to the wash cycle and if anything bleeds, it is supposed to catch the color so it doesn't show up where it isn't supposed to. I made a quilt before Christmas and used this method as I didn't have time and it had burgundy, dark green, etc and I threw it in with the color catcher and no problem!!! I believe that the brand is Shout. Great to have on hand.
