these are very likely the corner squares...look at a picture of the double wedding ring...there are 4 arcs with a 2 color, 4 patch that joins 4 different arcs in their corners... they are typically contrasting to the rest of the arcs...so that may be what they are... are the arcs 2.5" on the straight side?
