I have used fleece for batting - I have even used it in a scrappy table runner and hand-quilted without any drama. If you are concerned, maybe do a test using scrap and see if you like it. I know fleece is not for the serious, gorgeous, heirloom quilts but in my opinion for an "everyday" item, it is hardwearing and works.
