You have my sympathy. I once had the same experience of being woken up by the sound of dripping water when the pipes burst in the apartment above me in the middle of winter. I got out of bed to find water cascading down from my ceiling through all the light fixtures :-o I was really nervous/paranoid about the sound of running water in the apartment after that for a couple of years.
I hope you can salvage all your fabric and some of your books, and that you will be able to replace your sewing machine without too much difficulty.
