I have Janome machines. On one of their web sites it suggests putting thread thru hole and put about a 1/2" down the center hole before mounting it to wind. I do this now. When it's full I trim thread close at hole on top of bobbin.
That's what I do too now. And it keeps the loose end, when you get to it, at the bottom of the bobbin and less chance of tangles in the bobbin case.
If I wound by hand I just know I'd be winding the wrong way each time and when I pushed the pedal the thing would probably unwind instead...lol
