Peckish, thanks for the great tutorial. I have made lots of quilts and they are one of my favorite scrap types. It is amazing how many different designs you can do with strings. I use the muslin method, just don't like tearing off paper. I use a batting or sometime none and a fleece for backing. The fleece is warm without weight. I am so addicted to these things that I am constantly thinking about a new design as I drop a cutoff scrap into my collection bag. Oh, another thing I find when I use the muslin is that because the strings are well sewed down, you don't have to do too much quilting so they are quick to finish up.
