I make a lot of string quilts. I also make quilts from crumb blacks, which also use a foundation. I may machine quilt my quilts or tack (tie) them but, I have also used the fun and done method. Guess that would come under the machine quilting heading.

I wrote a tutorial last year for making string quilt blocks without a foundation. It's not a flip-n-sew method. Maybe it will help you.

Peckish, thanks for the great tutorial. I have made lots of quilts and they are one of my favorite scrap types. It is amazing how many different designs you can do with strings. I use the muslin method, just don't like tearing off paper. I use a batting or sometime none and a fleece for backing. The fleece is warm without weight. I am so addicted to these things that I am constantly thinking about a new design as I drop a cutoff scrap into my collection bag. Oh, another thing I find when I use the muslin is that because the strings are well sewed down, you don't have to do too much quilting so they are quick to finish up.

On Craftsy there is a free BOM quilt. The blocks for March are string blocks. On the second block, the Broken Spider Web the teacher shows you how to do foundation piece without the bulk.
