Default Pillowcover

My daughter has a small pillow that she puts on top of her regular pillow. She's been using it for years. Every week or so, I throw it in the washing machine. This makes the stuffing all lumpy, so I have to open up the end and replace the stuffing. I go through a lot of stuffing. Is there a better way of doing this? Is there a type of fabric that I can make a pillowcase out of, that helps protects it? I know they make pillow covers for regular sized pillows, but this one is only about 6" x 10".

TIA
Dorian
