I use a little device that holds chalk (I refilled with pounce powder when it was empty). It has a little rolling disk with tiny teeth and I just roll it along whatever marking line I need. I hand quilt in floor frames, so I set up the quilt sandwich, and just mark as I go along. I keep a terry towel handy and when I am thru stitching, I give it a rub and all the chalk is gone. Easy, quick and no worries about residue. I then run a sticky roller over the area to get rid of any terry towel lint. What I like most is that if I mark something and don't quite like the placement I just rub it off and do it again.
