I'm in the process of making pre-cut strips into a French braid and it is a big time reminder why I don't "DO" standard patterns.... they bore me. You sound like me. While I love the look of quilts where all the blocks are alike, I'd lose my mind trying to make them! I either want to make them all scrappy or make them all different patterns from the same fabric. I just bore too easily, I guess.
