Some rules are very useful - such as driving on your half of the highway/street - and just because they aren't printed or displayed at every intersection - is not a good reason for not being aware of them.
I would want anything I made that I entered into a fair or show labeled to improve the odds of getting it back and avoiding mixups.
It does seem reasonable to me that whoever is running the show would want/expect the label for a show quilt to be located in a consistent place. That way if they are in a stack face down, one could just flip up the same corner to get the info instead of having to play hide and seek for the label.
I think I've noticed that ALL the participants in a given contest seem to be 'labeled' in a consistent way.
