I doubt you would get enough from trimming the edges. If it is a straight sided quilt, bias isn't necessary, I don't use bias, I use straight strips on all mine. another idea, could you sew boarders on, making them large enough to fold over and use as your binding like you were going to do with the backing material? That would give u an easier way to attach and give a cute look.
