I always use continuous bias binding because once you try it a couple of times you'll never want to use anything else. It doesn't take many yards of fabric for quite a bit, even doubling and folding it over for easy application to the quilt sandwich no matter what the edge design is.

PS the binding is generally the most worn part of the quilt. Using bias binding allows some stretch. I don't think that you use more fabric, considering it's doubled and MUCH easier once you get the hang of it.
