I would go to the Missouri Star Quilt Co. and look at the videos for a simple table runner pattern. Jenny has easy directions to get you started. After a table runner or placemats, move up to one of her simple quilt patterns. If possible a beginner quilt class at your local quilt shop helps give you the basics but really you can learn just about anything on YouTube now.
