The best item in my sewing room is a 5 drawer office size filing cabinet. I fold my fabric around a 6 x 24" ruler then fold it in half. I then "file" my fabric by color in the drawers with a little tag on each telling its size. You can get 2 rows of fabric in each drawer. This works for me as I can see at a glance what the fabric looks like and the drawers keep the material dust free.
