Great tips on that thread! I have bookmarked it to look at later. I can do hearts, but do struggle with the cleavage too. I usually use a scant 1/4" seam, and like to use freezer paper on top, mark around with a fine pencil, remove the paper, then applique with needle turn. I know some people like to applique with the freezer paper still on, but that doesn't work well for me, something about my grip with the paper on.

Keep practicing! It will get easier. Maybe see if you can find any videos to watch. It does help to be shown. I was a self taught appliquer, but once I took a class I learned everything I had been doing wrong, and it got so much easier.
