I don't have auto cut or a single hole sole plate ans thread can get tangled and to prevent this when starting stitching I always start the stitching with a 'rabbit'. A small scrap to lead the thread. No more tangles.
I think if you do this on your machine it will solve the problem. Some people use HSTs or pair of four patches to start stitching and after a while they have enough to make a quilt!

Although I have the cutter on the "new" machine I still do the leaders/Enders and have been slowly getting enough scrap blocks for a nice old-fashioned everyday quilt....
