Yes, I have done it. I have a fishhook sharpener that I have used to remove burs. I twirl the needle as I draw the tip along the groove of the sharpener. Works very well.

My Wheeler & Wilson No.8 has a needle sharpener, round honing stone, attached to the frame that is operated by the treadle belt. So I am sure that our very thrifty ancestors did sharpen their needles. I am wondering if a fishhook sharpener would work to sharpen needles?
