I was trying a new thread experimenting with starts and stops and bobbin thread but did a class sample and put it in wooden oval. I made the oval design by tracing the oval and measuring in to get my feather stem. I put guide lines in the center but freehanded the crosshatching to get more of a texture than a formal crosshatch look. It is harder to go straight diagonally than straight across or up and down. It was fun.
