I like the uneven crosshatching for texture. I have only tried it once before. I use regular fabric paints that you can get in JoAnns or Michael's, even some very small town stores. I dip my brush in fabric medium and put the tip of the brush in the paint. Then I paint as shaky as I can on the edge of the petals. This gives me the depth of color with the dark on the edge of the petal. The light color in the rose petal is the background fabric. The fabric medium on the whole brush helps me blend the color gently to the background fabric.

When I practice or try something new, I like to have a usable piece afterwards. Since I was trying thread, it would not have mattered if the tension had been off and adjust as I went through the piece. It is a wall hanging.
