This is the way I do it too. You don't even need a ruler - there is generally enough of the binding left to use a a measure. The way I remember to sew it correctly if to "kiss and twist". You put the ends flat together -like they a kissing-and the twist 90 degree and sew across the diagonal, just like when you were going the strips. Works every time. I DO make sure it fits before I trim to 1/4" though!
